Dr. Daniel E. Wueste is the director of the Robert J. RutlandInstitute for Ethics and Professor of Philosophy at Clemson University. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Washington University in St. Louis. His primary research interests are in legal philosophy and practical and professional ethics
Aim of the workshop: (a) to identify and explore practical outreach ideas that will have desirable results that are achievable, (b) choose ideas to pursue, (c) get clear about what’s needed to pursue them, (d) map out the next step(s)
Title of the talk : Higher Education isn’t Burger King:Exploring the Limitations of the “Customer-Service” Model in Higher Education

Program Description: The three-fold aim of the talk is to (1) show why the metaphor of the customer service model is inappropriate, if our aim is to better understand and improve higher education; (2) consider some of the dangers associated with an uncritical embrace of the model; and (3) consider an alternative model, in which, working together to achieve a shared purpose, faculty and students recognize and embrace their interlocking responsibilities. The talk concludes with brief consideration of one of the virtues of the alternative model, namely, its usefulness in developing ways to promote a culture of academic integrity and teach ethics across the curriculum.
